Why did my Subaru quit running in the first place?

There are 4 main reasons that Subaru’s quit running

1. Blown Head Gaskets

One of the main reasons Subarus struggle with blown head gaskets more than other types of cars is their boxer style, horizontal engine. The horizontal design of the boxer-style engine helps reduce vibration allowing for a smoother ride. Subaru also feels that because the engine can be mounted lower in the chassis, it helps improve the car’s handling by lowering the center of gravity (in comparison to the traditional inline or “V” shaped engine where the pistons fire up and down vertically).

The challenge with Subaru’s horizontal engine is that it’s much more difficult to create a long-lasting seal with the head gasket. The head gasket’s job is to keep oil and antifreeze from leaking into the cylinders where the pistons fire. If the head gaskets start leaking eventually the engine will lose compression and will have to be removed to be resealed.

2. Broken Timing Belts

Another Common failure for Subarus, are broken timing belts. The timing belt’s job is to synchronize valves in the engine so they open and close at the right times to let the intake in and the exhaust out. If the timing belt breaks, stretches, or skips too many teeth, the timing of the engine can become off and the pistons can strike the valves and damage the engine internally.

Broken timing belts are very very preventable. The timing belt typically needs to be replaced every 80k-100k miles. With Subarus, it is very important to do the entire timing belt kit. It is a few hundred dollars more expensive to also replace the tensioners, pulleys, and water pump along with the timing belt or the new belt may still skip or stretch and damage the engine.

3. Oil Leaks

Oil leaks get the bronze medal for why Subaru engines experience failure. For whatever reason, 9 out of 10 Subarus that come through our shop have severe oil leaks once they hit 10 years old or older. They leak from the valve cover, the oil pan gaskets, the cam seals, and even the rear main seals sometimes.

Fixing those oil leaks is very labor-intensive which means it’s very expensive. If the leaks are bad enough and if they are neglected the engine can run out of oil and can get damaged internally.

4. CVT Transmission Failure

In 2010 Subaru began using CVT or Continuously Variable Transmission in the Legacy model. It also has adopted CVT transmissions for the outback, Impreza, Forester, and XV Crosstrek starting in 2014. Many car manufacturers have begun implementing CVT transmissions because (1) they can help maximize the power out of a smaller engine, (2) CVT transmissions allow for a smoother ride. Instead of shifting between gears, they use two variable-width pulleys connected by a flexible belt to accelerate and decelerate the car.

The issue with most CVT transmissions is that they seem to have less durability than many traditional automatic style transmissions. CVT transmissions frequently experience internal failure after 80k-100k miles and have to be replaced.

Why is my nonrunning Subaru worth so much more?

Despite some of their issues people just LOVE Subarus!!! They are great for camping. Their hatchbacks and AWD capabilities make them very versatile. The safety features and exterior design make them very appealing. Ultimately that is the reason why we can pay DOUBLE for your nonrunning Subaru, is because they are just so stinking popular! They hold their resale value well and more often than not, they are worth fixing even if they are in need of major repairs.
